Steel-Granulated
Shakes/Tiles
Steel-granulated
shakes and tiles, a type of metal roof, are typically lightweight
and durable. The panels are made from galvanized steel with a tough
acrylic overcoat. This product is available in several varieties
that may simulate hand-split shakes or concrete tiles. For additional
information, please see: www.decra.com.
Modified
Asphalt Composition Roofing Products
Modified
asphalt composition shingles use the synthetic rubber modifier Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene
(SBS) or Atactic Polypropylene (APP). The SBS or APP is blended
into the asphalt to enhance the flexibility, durability, crack resistance,
impact resistance and the resistance to ultraviolet light. Modified
asphalt composition shingles are available in standard three-tab
style or architectural laminated style for a more textured or dimensional
appearance.
These
modified products are more expensive than standard asphalt composition
shingle products, but the benefits of impact resistance and durability
could offset the initial cost over the life of the roof. Several
modified asphalt composition shingle products are currently listed
by the UL or other certified laboratories have received a Class
4 impact rating. For additional information, please see: www.malarkeyroofing.com
or www.atlasroofing.com.
Hail
Impact Resistance
UL2218
is a testing standard designed by Underwriter's Laboratories (UL)
to measure impact resistance. This testing standard is used to evaluate
a roofing material's potential resistance to the impact of hail.
Roofing
products have a testing label indicating a specific impact-resistance
rating. Depending on how the material performed during UL2218 testing,
the product may receive a class 1, 2, 3 or 4 impact resistance rating.
Roofing receiving a class 4 rating is expected to provide the greatest
protection from hail impact. This will cost more up front money,
but will save money on insurance cost if you are willing to remove
the appearance coverage on your roof. Class 2 and Class 4 qualify
for these discounts, but you will also be assuming more of the risk
when/if there is damage to your roof. For more information, please
see: www.decra.com.
Composition
Light/Medium and Heavy/Dimensional Weight
Organic
shingles and fiberglass-based composition shingles are used on most
homes. Organic composition shingles are made from ashpalt-impregnated
felt paper and are covered with colored mineral granules. Fiberglass
shingles consist of a fiberglass base with a top and bottom covering
of asphalt and mineral granules. Both types of composition roofing
shingles are available in a wide variety of weights. Zinc granules
may also be applied to organic or fiberglass products to protect
against algae (fungus) attack, a common problem in hot, humid areas.
Heavy weight composition shingles are designed to give consumers
an economical high quality alternative. These heavy/dimensional
shingles have a textured look. The result is a roof that may simulate
wood, concrete and slate but is less expensive and easier to install.
Heavy products do not necessarily perform better than light weight
products.
